Don't get caught in a trap about tie-in warranties

There exists a very common misconception that third-party optical transceivers will void OEM warranties and service contracts. However, in practice, this notion couldn't be further from the truth. Here is everything you and your customers need to know about taking advantage of a cost-effective option from Proline.

Sherman Anti-Trust Act

The Sherman Antitrust Act protects you and your customers if you choose to use third-party components with OEM hardware. This federal law says a company cannot “tie-in” exclusively their own upgrades, or invalidate a warranty or other support should an entity buy an upgrade from another company.

This act was put in place to encourage competition for the benefit of the consumer. We provide a quality, standards-tested product with a lifetime warranty that doesn’t violate existing warranty or service plans– at a fraction of the cost. It’s that simple.

Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 (15 United States Code section 2302(c)) specifically prohibits a "tie-in sales provision" whereby network OEMs cannot void their warranty offering if a customer installs a third-party transceiver in the system. Moreover, in the networking equipment and server markets, tie-in sales provisions can violate sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Antitrust Act (15 United States Code sections 1 and 2).

In-house coding and testing

On top of that, we code and test all of our optics and network cabling in-house, here in the United States. We have invested millions of dollars in a state-of-the-art lab that is constantly being updated with the newest OEM switches available (view our testbed here). Advanced Firmware and DOM coding is embedded in all network transceivers and direct attach cabling.

We pride ourselves on our lab technicians' experience and ability to ensure compatibility to the exact OEM specifications. Other third party vendors claim they do this but most of the time they are buying a part from a broker or another questionable source. They may allege that their optics are “coded and tested” but may in fact just be batch tested, and dressed with a new label. We are well aware of these practices, and strive to educate consumers in understanding the benefit of a true optics provider.
